It's the end of July, we're on the other side of a brutal heat wave and I'm two days away from an entire week on the New Jersey Shore with my family.
I haven't made any more progress on my list, but I did get to go out of town over 4th of July weekend.
We drove 3 hours north of the city to the Catskills to stay with a friend and her husband on their Rebeccahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13094573245238709203noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19952345.post-1973366944443532492013-07-01T21:16:00.000-04:002013-07-01T21:16:24.213-04:00Not That Far From Home
Last week I got to cross something off my list! That didn't take long, did it?
Just a 30 minute train ride puts us smack in the middle of the largest Chinatown in New York City.
It's amazing to me that I can be somewhere that feels so utterly foreign so close to home.
There produce I don't recognize and signs I can read, but there is for sure some food that I want to Rebeccahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13094573245238709203noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19952345.post-88600385848142272142013-06-23T08:47:00.000-04:002013-06-23T08:47:27.433-04:00Dog Days
Summer is in full swing now and I owe you guys a list!
I don't have very ambitious plans for this summer. There's a wedding to attend in July and a week planned at the Jersey Shore with my family. Other than that, I just want to take in the best NYC (mostly Queens) has to offer.
Maybe this is the year I finally get to the Jazz Age Lawn Party.
Since I live in Queens, the Rebeccahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13094573245238709203noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19952345.post-17114756876344556002013-05-31T12:56:00.002-04:002013-05-31T12:56:39.312-04:00Summer Kick Off!
Memorial Day was last Monday and what should have been the (unofficial) kickoff to summer was cold and dreary. I was in Minneapolis visiting a college friend, so at least I had good company.
I've visited Minneapolis twice now and each time I go, I fall in love a little more. It was fun to walk down the streets and fantasize about which house we would buy.
I got a taste ofRebeccahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13094573245238709203noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19952345.post-70171600209586837842013-05-23T12:14:00.001-04:002013-05-23T12:14:22.101-04:00"Doing" vs. Doing
Not too long ago, I was lamenting the fact that I didn't get to "do" anything on my one free weekend in a while. No movie, no happy hour, no museum visit, no cool flea markets, or parks.
But then I went back through my Instagram feed and realized that I "did" quite a bit. Maybe I need to re-evaluate my idea of "doing". Living in a big city like NYC makes me feel like I'm Rebeccahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13094573245238709203noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19952345.post-16714777789497337932013-05-06T20:06:00.001-04:002013-05-06T20:06:14.291-04:00Secret Weapon
Have I told you about my secret weapon?
It's this very unassuming recipe from Jamie Oliver, from this book. I've used it once to twice to make regular pancakes. My favorite thing about it, is that it's easy to remember, so I never have to look it up. It's just 1+1+1. Do you recall how I love these little formulas? I've talked about them before.
Here's the Rebeccahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13094573245238709203noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19952345.post-19790905558564778952013-03-25T16:48:00.001-04:002013-03-25T16:48:29.855-04:00Time Machine
This new project from the New Museum is amazing. I love this kind of interactive exhibition.
I wouldn't come to NYC until 6 years later, in 1999. Even then, I only commuted from NJ, taking the train to work in Soho and back every day.
By the time I moved for real, in 2004, this world seemed to already be rapidly changing.

I have a formula for clothes shopping/getting dressed. It's really more of a color theory, but let me tell you, it's genius. And it makes packing for vacation really, really easy.
The secret is I only buy clothes of a certain color so they all go together.
I have my building blocks of neutrals, which are denim and khaki and sometimes army green.
Then, Rebeccahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13094573245238709203noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19952345.post-41902922747472071822013-03-08T15:07:00.000-05:002013-03-08T15:07:51.622-05:00Now back to our regularly scheduled program
Whew. That was quite a break. I never intended to be gone for that long, but it first it was the holidays and then I went on vacation and before I knew it, it was March!
We've got a bit of catching up to do. While I was away, this blog turned 7 and I turned 36. It was a quiet celebration for both of us. Well, that time is upon us. I leave work today for NJ to spend some time with loved ones and then I'm on vacation for a whole week! Woot!
This year's holiday continues to be a scaled down one. A few years ago, my immediate family (brothers, mom and dad, and sister in law) decided that we would all draw a name and buy one gift instead of five. Last weekend, my brilliant friend, Danny, put together an apartment crawl in our neighborhood. I'm always listing the fact that I have so many people I know within a 10 block radius the #1 reason I love my 'hood. The only problem is, I never see any of them!
Danny came up with the idea of a bunch of us all visiting each others' home in one night. One day this week, I found myself curled up in bed, tearfully texting a dear friend that I just wasn't in the spirit. This is nothing new. Every year around this time, I start to feel a little overwhelmed.
I'm not enough of a planner to start preparing for the holidays in September, so suddenly December is upon me, and I don't have a tree and my gifts are half madeRebeccahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13094573245238709203noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19952345.post-47408242788995278242012-12-02T10:33:00.000-05:002012-12-02T10:33:52.979-05:00In Which I Learn I'm Ill Prepared for Winter
In the weeks directly following the storm, the weather was unusually cold and inclement. It was then, that I realized I didn't really have what I needed to get me through a NYC winter.
My beloved Hunter boots keep me dry, but not warm. These boots are perfect for stomping through the snow.
How did I make it through last winter without smart gloves? Constantly Rebeccahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13094573245238709203noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19952345.post-40273365242971042592012-11-21T12:10:00.002-05:002012-11-21T12:10:59.347-05:00Week of Salads
I had this post planned for a while, but then life took a serious turn. Now, though, with Thanksgiving looming, I though it might be appropriate. Maybe you want to do your own week of salads after an indulging long weekend.
The idea came to me when we were hit with quite a lot of leafy items in our CSA box. Instead of trying to make radicchio risotto or another plate of kaleRebeccahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13094573245238709203noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19952345.post-69350680788189477962012-11-08T12:50:00.000-05:002012-11-08T12:50:03.813-05:00Aftermath
I posted some of these pictures on FB along with a kind of rant-y post about making donations to those affected by the storm. I have been trying for a long time to come up with a way to share my volunteer experience in this space and give what I feel is helpful advice to those who read my blog. It's not easy.

Two very dear friends are getting hitched this weekend and I am over the moon! I thought I would do another fake wedding post in their honor.
And don't you know, while I was looking at my old posts to find the last one, it was almost exactly a year ago? Seems fitting, no?
I found this stunner while I was trolling etsy for vintage dresses. There seems to be a Rebeccahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13094573245238709203noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19952345.post-6265339498814151402012-10-04T12:09:00.001-04:002012-10-04T14:37:14.525-04:00Wants and Desires
The weather has decidedly turned (though is it really going to be 80 degrees tomorrow?!) and I'm pondering my fall wardrobe. Early morning visits to the gym have me now rethinking clothes from last fall and doing some much needed purging of the closet. Here's whats on my wish list for Fall.
I think these booties would be perfect with skinny jeans or longer trouser style pants. &Rebeccahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13094573245238709203noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19952345.post-16064962450606929822012-09-17T19:45:00.000-04:002012-09-17T19:45:04.172-04:00Oh Hey!

In the last year I often have wondered if I'm not a Country Mouse trapped in the body of a City Mouse. For as long as I can remember, I've wanted to live in The Big City, but now I'm drawn to the rhythms of the natural world, the idea of making more and more by hand, the traditions of cooking like my grandparents.

There's been a lot of talk on this blog lately about compromise and choosing and picking. There's also been a lot of griping off-blog about quality of life and not having enough time and not *wanting* to choose. I was in a really grumpy state - always having to compromise felt like never really having what I want.
Then, something amazing happened. One morning this week, I Rebeccahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13094573245238709203noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19952345.post-7959610927605101182012-07-10T14:57:00.001-04:002012-07-10T14:57:50.304-04:00Weekend Escape
Whew! What a weekend, right guys? I was
a pretty un-happy camper most of the time, content to hide in the
bedroom (where it's easier to cool down), eat breakfast and bed, and read
slightly trashy books.
I couldn't hide away the whole weekend, though, and so when I did venture outside, it was all about escaping the city.
We didn't have to go to far on Rebeccahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13094573245238709203noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19952345.post-46834191644040717142012-06-22T13:14:00.000-04:002012-06-23T08:09:39.595-04:00Seeing Green
I know I promised you vintage housewares for sale in my last post and they're coming, really they are. It just takes a while to photograph all that stuff! Also, I've been distracted by the state of my refrigerator.
